RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
