Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of personalities, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, evil spirits, and dark forces increasing in influence within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode ended with a major cliffhanger and revealed the initial group of heroes who will separate from the central cast to undertake their independent quest, distinct from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table consists of the determined fighter (played by Travis), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Considering a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that keeping everyone at the same party would be impossible.

That’s why, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Prelude, weaving together the personal journeys before branching into three separate parties: Fighters, Schemers, and Questers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

Per the DM, the Soldiers table is for participants who enjoy a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where diplomatic options are few and far between.

At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric the cleric might look out of place, but the actions of the third episode make it clear why these five characters are ideally matched for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

First, the team understands precisely where to head next after a intense opening clash with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose death initiated the narrative’s action—exploited the enemy for his own means, breaking into the secret base, striking Thimble, and swiping all the magical artifacts to auction.

Casimir then settled his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in the remote area, above the city, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each character has a personal reason to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, wants revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in Timmony and advises that it is a nasty place.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could help the team reach places they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character pledged a eternal obligation to The savior for his salvation and will now go with him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are hunted by the powers that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and Wicander turned against the powerful family and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by the family.

This means them no alternative but to journey toward the remote area in pursuit of the traitor.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we discover that the warrior group will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight players to round up the Questers and Planners tables.

Audiences can expect discovering which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the season’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
