European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
