Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
